Ramadan Mubarak — and Eid Mubarak — to all who are observing the holy month.

As King Charles III himself put it at the Windsor Castle State Banquet on 18 March 2026, welcoming President Tinubu during Ramadan: “It is my particular pleasure to wish you peace, blessings, and an abundance of joy. Ramadan Mubarak!” His Majesty adapted the entire programme of the state visit — removing the formal lunch, providing a prayer room, and adjusting the banquet to accommodate Iftar — in a gesture of respect that resonated far beyond the ceremony itself. The Dhoma e Tregtisë dhe Industrisë Shqipëri – Britani e Madhe (ABCCI) joins in extending warm wishes for Eid Mubarak to all Muslim members of our business community, in both Albania and the United Kingdom.[1][2][3]

A Historic Moment: The First Nigerian State Visit in 37 Years

On 18–19 March 2026, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu arrived at Windsor Castle as guests of King Charles III and Queen Camilla — marking the first state visit by a Nigerian head of state to the United Kingdom in 37 years. The last such visit was in 1989, when military president General Ibrahim Babangida was hosted by Queen Elizabeth II. Three previous state visits took place in 1989, 1981, and 1973.[4][5]

The timing was rich in symbolism. King Charles III and President Tinubu, both of whom took office in May 2023, had developed a personal rapport — meeting at COP28 in Dubai in 2023, at Buckingham Palace in September 2024, and now at Windsor Castle. The state visit was the first King Charles had hosted in 2026 and only the second since Germany’s in December 2025. Full state ceremonial honours — a guard, gun salutes, and flags lining Windsor’s streets — greeted the Nigerian president, underscoring the importance the British Crown attaches to this relationship.[6][7][4]

In his banquet speech, King Charles spoke of a “partnership of equals” between the United Kingdom and Nigeria, while also acknowledging frankly that “there are chapters in our shared history that I know have left painful marks — no words can dissolve these”. The candour was deliberate: this visit was not merely ceremonial, but a reset of a relationship built on historical complexity and future opportunity.[1]

What the Visit Means for Trade

Bilateral Trade: Already £8.1 Billion per Year

Trade between Nigeria and the United Kingdom already stands at approximately £8.1 billion per year as of 2025 — a figure the two governments described as the foundation of what could be a much larger relationship. The UK is Nigeria’s second largest source of diaspora remittances after the United States, underlining the economic depth of the people-to-people ties.[8][9][10]

The Flagship Deal: £746 Million Port Modernisation

The centrepiece of the visit was the formal signing of a £746 million (approximately $990 million) export finance agreement to modernise Nigeria’s two busiest seaports — the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa) and the Tin Can Island Port Complex. The deal, backed by UK Export Finance and arranged through Citibank, will transform ports that together handle over 70% of Nigeria’s total imports and exports.[11][12][13][14]

The deal is a genuine win for both sides:

• For Nigeria: modern cargo-handling infrastructure, digitalised systems replacing paper-based processes, sharply reduced vessel turnaround times, and a repositioning of Lagos as a competitive maritime hub for West and Central Africa[12][11]
• For the UK: the deal is expected to generate £236 million in contracts for British companies; among them, British Steel secures a £70 million contract — a significant boost to the UK’s struggling steel sector, announced alongside a new government strategy to support the industry[13][14]

Beyond the Ports: A Broader Partnership

The two countries also signed additional bilateral agreements covering trade facilitation, security cooperation, and military assistance, building on the strategic partnership concluded in November 2024. Officials expect the visit to unlock further investment flows, with the Nigerian government citing fifteen consecutive months of PMI growth and inflation that has halved since 2023 as signals of a stabilising reform trajectory. Business leaders and diaspora representatives from both nations attended a dedicated reception at Windsor Castle, reinforcing the message that this is a partnership rooted in people, not just governments.[8][15][16]

The Nigerian Community in the UK: Numbers and Impact

A Community of Scale

The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom is one of the largest, most educated, and most economically active diaspora communities in Europe. According to the 2021 Census, 270,768 usual residents in England and Wales were born in Nigeria — up from 191,183 in 2011, representing a growth of over 40% in a decade. Including Scotland and Northern Ireland, the total Nigerian-born population is estimated at approximately 300,000.[17][18][14]

London’s Peckham is often referred to as “Little Lagos” — a vivid illustration of how deeply Nigerian culture has embedded itself in British urban life. Nigerian communities are also notable in Leeds, Nottingham, Bristol, Cardiff, and Liverpool.[19]

Healthcare: A Pillar of the NHS

Perhaps no single statistic better captures the contribution of Nigerians to the UK than their role in the National Health Service. Nigeria is the fourth largest contributor of international NHS staff, with approximately 22,851 Nigerian nationals working in the NHS — behind only the UK itself, India, and the Philippines. At the state banquet, President Tinubu specifically highlighted this contribution, calling Nigerian medical professionals “vital to healthcare delivery across the UK” and noting their status among the largest groups of international workers supporting the health system.[22][23][24]

The minister of health of Nigeria has stated that 67% of all Nigerian doctors who emigrate choose the United Kingdom as their destination, and that the NHS would “struggle to provide services” if Nigerian professionals were to withdraw. This is not hyperbole — it is a structural reality that was explicitly acknowledged on both sides at the highest level during the state visit.[25][26]

Business, Culture, and Sport

The Nigerian diaspora’s contribution extends well beyond healthcare. President Tinubu cited athletes of Nigerian heritage — Bukayo Saka, Maro Itoje, Eberechi Eze, and Anthony Joshua — as examples of the deep human ties connecting both nations. In business, Nigerian entrepreneurs are prominent across finance, technology, retail, and the creative industries. The community’s annual remittances represent a significant share of Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings — over $25 billion globally in recent years from all diaspora combined, with the UK the second largest single source.[10][27][22]

1. Diaspora presence builds bilateral leverage — the scale of Nigerian professionals in UK institutions (especially the NHS) gave Nigeria a seat at the table that goes far beyond trade statistics alone
2. Cultural visibility creates diplomatic weight — Nigerian athletes, artists, and cultural figures have made Nigeria recognisable and admired in ways that soften political negotiations and create goodwill
3. Community organisation pays long-term dividends — decades of community-building, cultural associations, professional networks, and business chambers created the infrastructure for this moment
4. A bilateral chamber or trade body amplifies the relationship — formal structures between business communities in both countries translate diaspora presence into concrete commercial outcomes

The Albanian Community in the UK: Where It Stands

The Albanian community in the United Kingdom has grown significantly in recent years, though it remains at an earlier stage of institutional development than the Nigerian one. Estimates suggest approximately 200,000–300,000 Albanians now reside in the UK — a community concentrated in London but with a growing presence across England. Albanians in the UK are active in hospitality, construction, cleaning services, logistics, and increasingly in professional services and business.[28][29]

The community faces a challenge familiar to many newer diasporas: high public visibility for the wrong reasons in some media narratives, combined with under-representation in the formal structures — professional bodies, chambers of commerce, cultural institutions — that build long-term reputational capital. The Nigerian experience over decades shows that this gap is closeable, but that it requires deliberate investment in community organisations, professional networks, and bilateral business structures.

Lessons and Inspiration for the Albanian Community

The Dhoma e Tregtisë dhe Industrisë Shqipëri – Britani e Madhe (ABCCI) draws the following lessons from the Nigeria–UK moment:

• Invest in professional visibility: Nigerians in the NHS became a national asset. Albanian professionals working in the UK — across logistics, construction, hospitality, healthcare, and beyond — should be similarly celebrated and networked. Visibility in professional roles changes the public narrative
• Build bilateral trade structures: The £8.1 billion trade relationship between Nigeria and the UK was built over decades with formal bilateral trade bodies, business councils, and chambers of commerce playing a central role. The ABCCI exists to do precisely this for Albania and the UK — and this moment is a reminder of why that work matters
• Use cultural capital actively: Nigerian culture — music, food, Afrobeats, sport — has become a genuine soft-power asset in the UK. Albanian culture, language, history, and cuisine have the same potential, but need active promotion through cultural events, business forums, and diaspora engagement
• Engage at the highest diplomatic level: The state visit demonstrated that diaspora leverage works upward — community presence in the UK gave Nigeria the confidence and credibility to seek a full state visit after 37 years. The Albanian–UK relationship, strengthened by the EU accession process and growing bilateral trade, is on a similar trajectory
• Celebrate Eid together: King Charles’s decision to wish President Tinubu “Ramadan Mubarak” — adapting the entire state visit programme for the holy month — is a reminder that the UK is a country that makes space for every community’s identity and faith. This openness is one of the UK’s greatest assets, and it is an invitation to every community, including the Albanian one, to engage fully and confidently

The Nigeria–UK state visit of March 2026 is not just a bilateral diplomatic milestone — it is an inspiration. It shows what sustained community-building, professional contribution, and organised bilateral engagement can produce: a “partnership of equals” that delivers real economic outcomes, real jobs, and real recognition.

Siç e tha vetë Mbreti Charles III në banketin shtetëror në Kështjellën Windsor më 18 Mars 2026, duke mirëpritur Presidentin Tinubu gjatë Ramazanit: “Është kënaqësia ime e veçantë t’ju uroj paqe, bekime dhe gëzim të bollshëm. Ramazan Mubarak!” Madhëria e Tij përshtati të gjithë programin e vizitës shtetërore — duke hequr drekën zyrtare, duke siguruar një dhomë lutjesh dhe duke rregulluar banketin për të akomoduar Iftarin — në një gjest respekti që kishte jehonë shumë përtej ceremonisë. Një Moment Historik: Vizita e Parë Shtetërore Nigjeriane në 37 Vjet

Më 18–19 Mars 2026, Presidenti Bola Ahmed Tinubu dhe Zonja e Parë Oluremi Tinubu mbëritën në Kështjellën Windsor si mysafirë të Mbretit Charles III dhe Mbretëreshës Camilla — duke shënuar vizitën e parë shtetërore të një kreu shteti nigerian në Mbretërinë e Bashkuar në 37 vjet. Vizita e fundit e tillë kishte qenë në vitin 1989, kur presidenti ushtarak Gjeneral Ibrahim Babangida u prit nga Mbretëresha Elizabeth II.[4][5]

Koha kishte simbolikë të pasur. Mbreti Charles III dhe Presidenti Tinubu, të dy të ardhur në detyrë në Maj 2023, kishin zhvilluar një raport personal — duke u takuar në COP28 në Dubai në 2023, në Pallatin Buckingham në Shtator 2024, dhe tani në Windsor. Tregti Dypalëshe: Tashmë 8.1 Miliardë Sterlina në Vit

Tregtia midis Nigjerisë dhe Mbretërisë së Bashkuar qëndron tashmë në rreth 8.1 miliardë sterlina në vit (2025) — shifër që të dy qeveritë e përshkruajtën si themel i asaj që mund të jetë një marrëdhënie shumë më e madhe. MB është burimi i dytë më i madh i dërgesave të diasporës nigjeriane pas SHBA-ve, duke theksuar thellësinë ekonomike të lidhjeve ndërmjet njerëzve.[8][9][10]

Marrëveshja Kryesore: 746 Milionë Sterlina për Modernizimin e Porteve

Pika kulmore e vizitës ishte nënshkrimi zyrtar i një marrëveshjeje financimi eksporti prej 746 milionë sterlinash (rreth 990 milionë dollarësh) për modernizimin e dy porteve më të ngarkuara të Nigjerisë — Kompleksi i Portit të Lagosit (Apapa) dhe Kompleksi i Portit të Ishullit Tin Can. Marrëveshja, e mbështetur nga UK Export Finance dhe e organizuar nëpërmjet Citibank, do të transformojë porte që bashkërisht trajtojnë mbi 70% të importeve dhe eksporteve totale të Nigjerisë.[11][12][13][14]

Marrëveshja është fitim i vërtetë për të dyja palët:

• Për Nigjerinë: infrastrukturë moderne e trajtimit të mallrave, sisteme të dixhitalizuara që zëvendësojnë proceset me letër, ulje e ndjeshme e kohës së qëndrimit të anijeve dhe rivendosja e Lagosit si qendër konkurruese detare për Afrikën Perëndimore dhe Qendrore[12][11]
• Për MB-në: marrëveshja pritet të gjenerojë 236 milionë sterlina në kontrata për kompanitë britanike; ndër to, British Steel siguron një kontratë prej 70 milionë sterlinash — një impuls i rëndësishëm për sektorin britanik të çelikut[13][14]

Sipas Censusit të 2021, 270,768 rezidentë të zakonshëm në Angli dhe Uells kishin lindur në Nigeri — nga 191,183 në 2011, duke përfaqësuar rritje mbi 40% brenda një dekade. Peckham-i i Londrës shpesh quhet “Lagos i Vogël” — një ilustrim i gjallë i sa thellë kultura nigeriane është ngulitur në jetën urbane britanike.[19]

Kujdesi Shëndetësor: Një Shtyllë e NHS-it

Ndoshta asnjë statistikë e vetme nuk e pasqyron më mirë kontributin e nigerianëve në MB sesa roli i tyre në Shërbimin Kombëtar Shëndetësor. Nigeria është kontribuuesi i katërt më i madh i stafit ndërkombëtar të NHS-it, me rreth 22,851 shtetas nigerian që punojnë në NHS — pas vetëm MB-së, Indisë dhe Filipineve. Në banketin shtetëror, Presidenti Tinubu theksoi specifikisht këtë kontribut, duke i quajtur profesionistët mjekësorë nigerianë “jetësorë për ofrimin e kujdesit shëndetësor në të gjithë MB-në”.[22][23][24]

Ministri i shëndetësisë i Nigjerisë ka deklaruar se 67% e të gjithë mjekëve nigerian që emigrojnë zgjedhin Mbretërinë e Bashkuar si destinacion, dhe se NHS-i do të “luftonte për të ofruar shërbime” nëse profesionistët nigerian do të largoheshin. Kjo është e dhënë strukturore — e pranuar nga të dyja palët në nivelin më të lartë gjatë vizitës shtetërore.[25][26]

1. Prania e diasporës ndërton levë dypalëshe — shkalla e profesionistëve nigerian në institucionet britanike (sidomos NHS-i) i dha Nigjerisë një vend në tryezë që shkon shumë përtej statistikave të tregtisë

Komuniteti Shqiptar në MB: Ku Qëndron

Komuniteti shqiptar në Mbretërinë e Bashkuar është rritur ndjeshëm vitet e fundit, megjithëse mbetet në një fazë më të hershme të zhvillimit institucional sesa ai nigerian. Vlerësimet sugjerojnë se rreth 200,000–300,000 shqiptarë banojnë tani në MB — komunitet i përqendruar në Londër, por me pranie në rritje në të gjithë Anglinë. Shqiptarët në MB janë aktivë në hoteleri, ndërtim, shërbime pastrimi, logjistikë dhe gjithnjë e më shumë në shërbime profesionale dhe biznes.[28][29]

Komuniteti përballet me një sfidë të njohur për shumë diaspora të reja: dukshmëri e lartë publike për arsye të gabuara në disa narrative mediatike, e kombinuar me nënpërfaqësim në strukturat formale — organet profesionale, dhomat e tregtisë, institucionet kulturore — që ndërtojnë kapital reputacional afatgjatë. Eksperienca nigjeriane gjatë dekadave tregon se kjo hendek mund të mbushet, por kërkon investim të qëllimshëm në organizata komunitare, rrjete profesionale dhe struktura biznesi dypalëshe.

Mësime dhe Frymëzim për Komunitetin Shqiptar

Dhoma e Tregtisë dhe Industrisë Shqipëri – Britani e Madhe nxjerr mësimet e mëposhtme nga momenti Nigeri–MB:

• Investoni në dukshmërinë profesionale: Nigerianët në NHS u bënë një pasuri kombëtare. Profesionistët shqiptarë që punojnë në MB — në logjistikë, ndërtim, hoteleri, kujdes shëndetësor dhe më gjerë — duhet të festohen dhe të rrjetëzohen njëlloj. Dukshmëria në role profesionale ndryshon narrativën publike
• Ndërtoni struktura tregtare dypalëshe: Marrëdhënia tregtare prej 8.1 miliardë sterlinash midis Nigjerisë dhe MB-së u ndërtua gjatë dekadave me organe formale tregtare dypalëshe, këshilla biznesi dhe dhoma tregtie. ABCCI-t ekziston pikërisht për të bërë këtë për Shqipërinë dhe MB-në — dhe ky moment na kujton pse kjo punë ka rëndësi
• Përdorni kapitalin kulturor aktivisht: Kultura nigjeriane — muzika, ushqimi, Afrobeats-i, sporti — është bërë një pasuri e vërtetë e fuqisë së butë në MB. Kultura, gjuha, historia dhe gastronomia shqiptare kanë të njëjtin potencial, por kanë nevojë për promovim aktiv nëpërmjet ngjarjeve kulturore, forumeve të biznesit dhe angazhimit të diasporës
• Angazhohuni në nivelin më të lartë diplomatik: Vizita shtetërore demonstroi se levërtisja e diasporës funksionon edhe lart — prania e komunitetit në MB i dha Nigjerisë besimin dhe besueshmërinë për të kërkuar një vizitë shtetërore të plotë pas 37 vitesh. Marrëdhënia Shqipëri–MB, e forcuar nga procesi i anëtarësimit në BE dhe tregti dypalëshe në rritje, është në një trajektore të ngjashme
• Festoni Bajramin së bashku: Vendimi i Mbretit Charles për të uruar Presidentin Tinubu “Ramazan Mubarak” — duke përshtatur të gjithë programin e vizitës shtetërore për muajin e shenjtë — na kujton se MB është një vend që i bën vend identitetit dhe besimit të çdo komuniteti. Një Shënim i Fundit

Vizita shtetërore Nigeri–MB e Marsit 2026 nuk është vetëm një moment diplomatik dypalësh historik — është frymëzim. Ajo tregon se çfarë mund të prodhojë ndërtimi i qëndrueshëm i komunitetit, kontributi profesional dhe angazhimi i organizuar dypalësh: një “partneritet të barabartëve” që jep rezultate reale ekonomike, vende pune reale dhe njohje reale.

ABCCI-t pret me padurim ditën kur një moment po aq historik mund të festohet midis Shqipërisë dhe Mbretërisë së Bashkuar — dhe jemi të vendosur të ndërtojmë themelet pikërisht për këtë.
